The Chapada Diamantina (could be translated as the Diamond Highlands) National Park is located in the center of Bahia state, at 420Km from Salvador, in a 38.000Km2 area, larger than countries like Holland, Belgium or Israel. The region became famous during the 19th century for the Diamond exploration that lasted until 1990, when the National Park was finally founded, considered today one of the most beautiful National Parks in Brazil.
The area offers an impressive variety of ecosytems, from rain forests to “cerrado” (a typical dry land from the northwestern part of Brazil), wildlife and flora. During their stay, tourists get impressed by the uncountable valleys, canyons, waterfalls, limestone caves, natural pools with blue-crystal water and even a small pantanal (swampland). Chapada’s landscape is a creation of the erosion process that the region suffered in the beginning of the pre-Cambrian period, forming towers of minerals known as ‘tepuy’, the name given by the local Indians that dominated the area.
